FAQ
FergusonTartan.jpg
  • Is it difficult to learn Bagpipes?
Whilst Bagpipes have some unique challenges, they, like all musical instruments take time and effort to master. With a bit of natural talent, a good tutor and regular practice, steady progress should be made.
  • At what age should one start learning to play Bagpipes or Snare Drums?
Learners of the Bagpipes start on a practice chanter. Drummers learn on practice drum pads and can start between the ages of 8-10 years of age. Much depends on the size of the childs hands and the ability to cover the holes on the chanter or hold a set of Drum sticks. There is also a growing number of adult students between ages 30-40 starting to learn to play the bagpipes.
  • How long does it take to learn to play Bagpipes and Snare Drums
This depends on a number of factors. Age, talent, patience, enthusiasm, a willingness to learn and regular practice are all factors that will determine the length of time taken to learn to play Bagpipes or Snare Drums. The focus at the early stage will be on technique and rudiments. Mastery of the rudiments is a lifelong journey that facilitates good musical expression. Working with a good tutor and having the right personal traits, students should be able to play at a basic level on the bagpipes or drums in 9 – 12 months.
